Price for both: $120

Teaching through ‘hands-on-adjustments’ requires more than a general knowledge of asana alignment and anatomy. It requires that the teacher have a keen eye for movement patterns, an intuitive sense of where the student could use more space and length, and an understanding of what part of the body needs to engage or release to move the student closest to their optimal posture. Sometimes, a simple verbal cue can enhance the adjustment and sometime the teacher’s body weight needs to be used to effectively assist students in various stages of practice. In this two part workshop and subsequent observation clinic, we will work on:

- observing, assessing, and making useful suggestions without judgement

- learning to observe students’ movement patterns in surya namaskara

-noticing patterns in various asanas, the student’s particular way of approaching them, and developing ideas on how to help in shifting established habits

- building confidence with learning  and using various ‘standard’ adjustments across asana families

- developing the confidence to improvise and respond in an effective and appropriate way when necessary

- learning various types of adjustment: corrective, deepening, encouraging, assisting, supportive, etc.

- developing awareness of one’s own body in relationship to the student and how to use more than just hands in giving adjustments

- taking care of your own body in the process of assisting others

The first part of this workshop will focus on the standing postures of the Ashtanga Vinyasa method. The second part will deal with the seated postures of the primary series. We will reference the standing poses and their relationship to the seated poses and build on what we have learned. Participants are encouraged to make appointments to shadow Erika and observe one mysore session at Breathe Los Gatos as part of these workshops to further develop their ‘eye’. Although workshops can be taken separately, you are encouraged to attend both. There will be a part three with a focus on backbends forthcoming winter 2014. Although primarily developed for teachers and teacher trainees, this workshop is appropriate and open to the serious students of yoga, and will help in deepening their understanding of asana practice.
